Eliza Deas (Mrs John Deas) of Charles Town, South Carolina wrote letters to her family back in Scotland in the 1770s. One of the ships they were was travelling on was captured and the documents taken to England where they have been safely stored for hundreds of years. Now The Prize Papers project is cataloging them so that the contents which vary from letters to poetry and include fabric samples, client lists, crew lists, captains logs and much more, can be read and studied by a wider audience.
Anne Ramon, tells us about one of Eliza’s letters and her life in eighteenth century South Carolina.
